Casper Television is a quirky art rock/post-punk band from New York City, currently consisting of Sei Smith (guitars, vocals), Grace Jung (bass, vocals) and Sasha Altskan (drums). I really liked their 2021 debut LP Basic Cable, and the same goes for their new EP, which bears the appealing title Yea Yea Yea, It’s True. Its six songs are quite varied, but the common denominator is that they are guitar-driven, charmingly rambling, and full of good ideas both musically and lyrically. There aren’t that many songs released about Government Girls (“Don’t think no more // Don’t question anything”) and Panic Attack‘s (“When I stop thinking ’bout thinking // That’s one thought that I won’t regret”), so let’s cherish those. The French Song stands out for me, though, thanks to an irresistible riff and inimitable wordplay (“I was walking backward I said // Asljdhfbladrgbklat // Then I said asorubnbish // Slkdargsdkt // Aahsflgajhdbfa woo”)—it’s probably true.
Yea Yea Yea, It’s True, produced by Robert Hughson, is out now digitally (self-released).
