In 1989, Sarah Records released a legendary 7″ by The Field Mice, with the shimmering song Sensitive on the A-side. Many years later, it is now the namesake of a worthy new anthology of the indie pop scene of the 1980s. It is a double album with 30 pieces of jangling gems, with lots of the familiar names present, including The Jesus & Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Orange Juice, The Primitives, The Wedding Present, That Petrol Emotion and Talulah Gosh, and fortunately also some lesser-known artists (tracklist below this post). We could say a lot about it, but The Quietus has already done a good job in their review, and if you’re at all into indie pop, you know what to do: just listen.
Unless you were able to purchase the original singles back in the day (most are now unaffordable), this is a must-have compilation from London label Needle Mythology, the London-based record label founded by writer/broadcaster Pete Paphides, who contributes an essay and extensive track-by-track notes.
Sensitive: An Indie Pop Anthology, compiled by Pete Paphides, will be released on February 28th, on 2-CD and vinyl 2-LP, through Needle Mythology. All songs have been newly mastered at Abbey Road by Miles Showell.
