Prolific British musician Andrew Johnson has started another solo project, under the moniker of The Savage Mercys, and it’s a welcome one. He calls it a love letter to early, pre-acid Beatles, Merseybeat and British Invasion bands of the early 60s, and that’s exactly what it sounds like. For the Meet The Savage Mercys LP he recorded fourteen uplifting songs with pleasant vocals, jangly guitars and sing-along choruses. Vintage yet refreshing, charming and danceable – Ride That Train and Shake It Down in particular would have been hits with the swinging youth sixty years ago. The whole thing is online now, but this music works best from a turntable.
Meet The Savage Mercys, written, recorded and produced by Andrew Johnson, is out on vinyl LP – in mono – through Lovestone Records. For those who want more, the digital double A-side single These Words / Looking At You is also available.
