Fans of Richard Tripps’ self-titled debut LP from last year will have to take some time to get used to the demo-like lo-fi tape sound of his sophomore album Between The Morning. Inspired by the work of White Fence, The Velvet Underground and The Range of Light Wilderness, the California singer-songwriter/multi instrumentalist wrote and performed ten new songs that are more rudimentary and less polished, somewhat reminiscent of The Vaselines and The Clean. This is folky indie pop/rock with relatable lyrics and an intimate feeling, as if you are witnessing it live – largely subdued and straightforward, but with the occasional more experimental parts in the background. After a few listens, this record gets under your skin just as much as the year-end list-worthy previous one.
Between The Morning is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Perpetual Doom and Plume Records. Vocals, guitar, bass, keys and drums by Richard Tripps. Also featuring Matt Nice (flute, drums, keys) and Blake Kennedy (bass, backing vocals, bellzouki guitar) on select tracks.
