Cincinnati, Ohio-based musician/artist Joey Joesph aka Joey Cook recently shared on YouTube some tips on how to make it as a musician these days (also: how to avoid it becoming a one way ticket to Sad Town), and on Instagram he explained why he removed his music from Spotify. Wise words in both cases, but I still prefer to listen to his songs (which you can’t actually see separately from these actions). Solo studio album number 11 has just been released (we wrote about 2022’s Do You Bongo?, but missed quite a bit after that), almost self-titled as The Little Prince of Rock n Roll, featuring nine new original songs that are quite idiosyncratic. Labeled as psychedelic garage rock, but to manage expectations I think we should mention that synth punk predominates, as if the worlds of Ty Segall and Alan Vega collide. It’s probably not enough to earn the songwriter a living, but I haven’t heard anything this year that represents the state of the industry as well as standout opening track 2024. Engaging and algorithm-beating.
The Little Prince of Rock n Roll is out now digitally via Eyebrow Palace.
