Anyone who keeps their eyes and ears open will find inspiration everywhere, in everything. For example, in a conversation at the British Museum with a stranger on the hunt for Husband #4. It tempted London-based four-piece devices to name their debut EP Husband #1: “It’s like we are already on the lookout for the next one. If you saw us live, you’d know that is true.” We are dealing here with Robin Footitt (vocals), Fadi Borgi (guitar), Martin Llavallol (bass) and Louis Richardson (drums), who not only visit exhibitions but also make music, a sound worth sharing. They breathe art rock, they do art rock. Yet these five tracks are more about the inside than about the packaging, with personal lyrics, potent guitar parts and heartfelt vocals, songs that are open to multiple interpretations, but stem from fairly unambiguous thoughts about rebirth (Afterlife), breaking up (Cap It Off) or personal doubt (Zeros and Ceilings). Although the band is already longing for Husband #2, we are far from tired of #1.
