London quartet devices (no capitals) push further into their strange, theatrical universe on DIVORCES (in caps lock), a debut full-length that feels equally indebted to glam-era storytelling and post-rock experimentation, picking up where their Husband #1 EP left us. Switching between grandiosity and raw energy, between sophisti-pop and post-punk influences, the band sells every second with conviction.
Frontman Robin Footitt’s lyrics turn fractured relationships, queer identity, and emotional neglect into something mythic, humorous, and surreal. The eleven songs revolve around connection and disconnection, while their characters drift through parties, holidays, arguments, and imagined escapes searching for authenticity and intimacy: “Look, I never asked // For the constant distraction // Your body asked mine // And we sparked an attraction // We spoke back then // With touch and now read the comments” (from Turn Them Down (It’ll Be Okay)).
In short, DIVORCES is all about bold, personal art rock that refuses to sand down its edges, and that’s exactly why it works.
DIVORCES—produced by Bob Cooper—is out digitally via Red Tongue Music. Featuring Robin Footitt (vocals), Fadi Borgi (guitar), Martin Llavallol (bass), and Louis Richardson (drums).
