Eleven months after their charming Elvis Lives! album, Midwestern trio The Cherry Tops return with another seven-song dose of what I previously described as “clean-cut garage pop for tender-hearted misfits.” Six of the tracks here are originals, with the remaining spot reserved for a lovely take on The Mystics’ late-’50s classic Hushabye.
What ties these songs together is their timeless pull. These are stripped-down tunes with zero interest in overcomplicating things, the kind of songs that quietly loosen your shoulders while getting your feet moving at the same time. The Cherry Tops understand that good music does not need to reinvent the wheel when the melodies are this warm and inviting.
