This week saw the release of worthy debut LPs from supergroups Boo Boos (Mark ‘E’ Everett of Eels and Kate Mattison of 79.5) and Drink the Sea (Peter Buck of R.E.M., Duke Garwood of the Mark Lanegan Band, Alain Johannes of Eleven, and Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees and Mad Season, with Lisette Garcia and Abbey Blackwell), and anyone who likes those should definitely listen to David Robert Pollock‘s first album, that has a somewhat similar feel and sound.

With Under The Stone, the Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist crafts country-adjacent folk songs that shimmer with melody while carrying the weight of loss, impermanence, and life’s absurd cruelties, sung by a wry, empathetic voice. Despite the heavy themes, the record never feels weighed down—the natural storytelling, buoyant rhythms, and surprising soundscapes are too inviting.

Alongside his songwriting, Pollock is working on independent film with his series The David Robert Pollock Show, reminiscent of classic variety shows of the 1970s.
