Gritty country soul as a sincere thank you to the church, or rather its meaningful music of yesteryear. That’s what Thy Burdens descends upon us, the latest record from Asheville, North Carolina-based Americana trio Drunken Prayer. Morgan Geer (guitars, vocals), Bobby Matt Patton (bass, vocals), and Bronson Tew (drums) play traditionals and cover not-so-familiar tunes by George Jones (The Selfishness In Man), Larry Sparks & The Lonesome Ramblers (I’ve Just Seen the Rock of Ages), Bob Dylan (Long Ago, Far Away), and others—shot through with fire, brass, and reverence.
They do a great job (you feel the personal importance of the choice cuts for the band members), for believers and skeptics alike, tuned to the key of kindness and justice. The ten songs here bridge the sacred and the stomping—and guts and groove—filtered through a barroom speaker stack and a punk preacher’s heart. If salvation sounds like this, sign us up.
Thy Burdens, recorded by Starlin Browning and Bronson Tew, is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Dial Back Sound.
