My first acquaintance with American singer-songwriter Ezra Furman dates back more than 15 years, when I heard the awesome single Take Off Your Sunglasses, from the Inside The Human Body LP (2008). It’s an understatement to say that a lot has happened since then, but I hear the same eagerness and sensation of the first few albums on the latest one, entitled Goodbye Small Head (after a phrase from Sleater-Kinney’s Get Up). The twelve new songs—a proper cover of Alex Walton’s I Need the Angel to close—revolve around the experience of completely losing control, making it an emotional and intense listening experience, that somehow is simultaneously comforting and empowering. At its core this is a rock band record—strings and samples add intrigue and richness—with that boundless energy and distinctive vocals that made me a fan for life always at the forefront.
Goodbye Small Head—produced by Brian Deck—is out now digitally, on CD and vinyl LP, through Bella Union.
