New album: The Memories || Late

A love letter to the long night, a delicate balance of heartache and humor

Fifteen years into their career, it makes sense that The Memories are developing a more mature sound—the 20 new tunes on their Late LP are still straightforward and unpretentious, but a bit more polished and solid. The lyrics are as slacker as ever though—look at song titles like Like A Cigarette, She Smokes Meth, Don’t Puke In The Car, I Saw Jesus At The 7-11, I Don’t Want To Feel Like Shit, and so on—and you’ll get the idea, but it works like a charm.

From their shared practice space, Rikky Gage (vocals, drums, guitar, keys, tambourine, guiro), Izak Arida (bass, guitar, keys, drums) and Nakisso Peralta (guitar) reflect in an intimate way on dark after hours, blending nostalgia, melancholy, and camaraderie into personal lyrics that balance between sadness and silliness. Set to lo-fi garage pop with jangly guitars, uplifting hooks and a laid-back vibe, this is an eccentric but warm-hearted love letter to long nights.

Late, produced by Izak Arida, is out now digitally via Gnar Tapes.
