Fans of roots music, this one is for you. Arizona-raised/Los Angeles-based singer, guitarist and songwriter Annie Dolan could easily become a big name. She will release an all-originals pop/rock LP next year, but during its recording process she also did a three-day session last July—together with Chicago-based singer, guitarist and songwriter Joel Paterson—featuring covers of classic rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, country and Western swing tunes That session now makes up her official debut album, Atta Boy Girl.
These are warm and wonderful takes on Atta Boy Girl (Roger Miller), Foolin’ Around (Buck Owens), (Marie’s The Name) His Latest Flame (first recorded by Del Shannon, popularized by Elvis Presley), Sorry Charlie (Carl Perkins), You’re My Kingdom (Roger Miller) and other oldies, accompanied by a stellar rhythm section, and expertly produced. Among the ten songs is one original, the catchy floor filler Fussbudget, and it is telling that this is actually the undisputed highlight here—that bodes well.
Atta Boy Girl, produced by Joel Paterson, is out now digitally via Ventrella Records, and soon on vinyl LP through Sleazy Records. Featuring Annie Dolan (vocals, guitar), Joel Paterson (guitar, steel guitar), Beau Sample (upright bass) and Alex Hall (drums).
