Melodic Canvas is a Northern Michigan-based alternative rock four-piece led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Evan Alderton. Their new full-length Discoloration breathes new life into the 90s grunge movement, boosted with shoegaze and emocore influences. These nine original songs about relatable modern day struggles are dark and diverse, with effective tempo changes and explosive guitar riffs, carried by powerful but pleasant sneering vocals. Wonderful how the band members build their own sound and structures within the known frameworks, not afraid to take their time when necessary (closing track Until Yesterday lasts over nine minutes). Ultimately, the feeling that remains is more hopeful than you might expect based on the great album title and worrisome cover art.
Discoloration is out now digitally and on cassette through Setterwind Records. RIYL: Nirvana, Silverchair, Everclear, Days Of The New.
