KCAR might sound like a radio station or a Korean car brand, but it’s actually a Vancouver trio (Fiona Ackerman, Jenni Lee & Lyndsay Sung) born in the early days of the pandemic. Three, their aptly named third (mini-)album, is my introduction to the band, and it’s left me with a sugar rush that I just have to share.
This nine-track collection is a thrilling blend of no wave, art rock, post-punk, power pop, and garage pop. Imagine Joan Jett crashing a party with The Go-Go’s, the B-52’s, and The Exbats, and you get an idea of the intoxicating cocktail KCAR serves up.
Clearly, this is a band that presents their artsy coolness in an extremely accessible package. Three is packed with potential hits. I’ve added my favorites below, but fair warning: this album is as addictive as it is seductive.
