The Nowness is a new project by singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Joakim Jähnke, a native of Uppsala (Sweden) with Sami heritage, who apparently has gained useful experiences in bands such as Thorsten Flink & Revolution Orchestra, START, The New Clear Clouds and Psychowards. Listening to the self-titled debut full-length under the moniker of The Nowness, you can’t help but conclude that he – joined by John Lewis – is churning out one earworm chorus after another. The album contains twelve ramshackle pub rock songs that can be counted among the most appealing power pop of recent times. From the dynamic rhythm section to the distinctive vocals, this is as charming and quirky as it is soulful and catchy. The lyrics of standout track That Popmusic best express what this is all about: “Sometimes it means nothing and sometimes it’s everything, but one way or the other it will make you dance and sing.”
The Nowness’ self-titled album, produced by Markus Miljand, is out now digitally via Pow! In The Face, a division of Bark At Your Owner.
