The hands of Erik Nervous (Erik Hart) are all over punk releases from the Midwest, and his involvement typically is a surefire indicator of something worth your attention. This holds true as well when he releases his own creations. Immaturity (out now on Feel It and FatCat Records) is his latest, a 40-minute (post)punk affair with an inviting cartoon album cover to confuse unsuspecting listeners. The record goes from frantic and catchy punk (Ankle Deep) to ’80s synth pop (Comfortable), and has the spontaneous vibe and varied sound of a solo artist messing around in his basement. A delighftul cover of They Might Be Giants’ (She Was A) Hotel Detective and a song like Pretentious Instrumental Break are further testimony of an off the cuff writing and recording process.
I am not saying that we should lock up Erik Nervous in his basement more frequently, but when he creates records like this, we may want to reconsider.
