Four years after their first LP Always Friends (or: six years after their debut EP Routine), Italian slacker rock outfit FREEZ return with their sophomore album Icebreaker. In 21 minutes, songwriter Michele Bellinaso (vocals, guitar), Stefano Bassan (guitar), Alessandro Zordan (bass), Riccardo Persico (organ, percussion) and Nicolò Bressan (drums) present us with eight energetic songs that vary in mood and tempo – a personal reflection of where the band members find themselves now and what they’ve lived through – but are all equally attractive. While it all may seem too refined to actually fit neatly into the garage rock category, the band’s dynamic rhythm section and the alluringly sneering vocals ensure an exhilarating listening experience that still embraces the genre’s exciting spirit.
