Donald Trump once turned down a golden toilet, and I always wondered whether Hamilton trio Golden Shitters took their name from that eyebrow raising news story. I mean, being something Donald Trump rejects is a fine jumpstart for any punk band, right? But no, the name was taken from one of the early songs the band wrote, making it more like a chicken and egg origin story than a dump on a terrible human being. Of course, picking Golden Shitters as a name is a hell of a way to raise expectations among listeners. Press play below and likely those expectations are met.
But for everything that is trashy and punk about Golden Shitters, you can tell they are pro’s. Matt Ellis (of Anxious Pleasers, Plasticheads, The Vapids and Flesh Rag), Kyle Fisher (The Dirty Nil) and Dave Tyson (Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs) are all scene veterans. Golden Shitters offers them an outlet for their love of the darker and more dangerous side of ramonescore (RIYL: The Spits) and the good kind of bad slasher movies. Ellis, Fisher and Tyson don’t let their skill get in the way of making something that, at least at the surface, sounds deliberately moronic. But, they do so in style and make it sound awesome. Mainstream music lovers will look at it in disgust, but I am pretty sure a lot of punk fans will go crazy for this tight record.
About a year ago, I Don’t Wanna Go To The Mall was the first song I heard by Golden Shitters. It was an instant favorite, and I love how they sandwiched the song on the album between the extremely infectious Trash and In The Green. It’s my favorite section of the record, but I am pretty sure others will find their own personal favorites. Build on raw energy and late night movie marathons, this debut shreds and is perfect for jumpin’ around and slammin’ your body in whatever or whoever – mall zombies and mutated creatures included.
Golden Shitters’ debut is out on Tape and LP at Memorable But Not Honorable Tapes.
