Fertile State is the second Blue Ocean LP, but it is still their debut full length – LP number 1 was a compilation of EPs, and a good one too. Blue Ocean are located in the indie pop hotbed that is the Bay Area, a place where creativity and inspiration seem to be a contagious as the next flu epidemic.
Of all the great music that is coming out of the area, Blue Ocean are one of the more adventurous acts. They are less easy to grasp, not as effortlessly a listen, but their music sneaks up on you and has staying power, more sustainable than fleeting. Fertile State sees Blue Ocean further honing their own sound where noise pop, shoegaze and electronic instrumentals go hand in hand. It’s different and I like it.
