The list of new releases was endless last Friday, impossible to listen to everything at once, so I only now got around to the new 7″ single from UK garage punk/glam rock/indie pop band The Veras. That’s the only reason why its A-side is missing in yesterday’s overview of September’s best cover songs, which would otherwise have been a certainty. We’re talking about Something To Say, a lost recording by The Action from 1967 or 1968 that has gradually gained fame, which now is revived by Matt Bond (vocals, guitar), Neil Runalis (bass), Jon Gray (organ, vocals) and Dan Taylor (drums). In their hands it’s a Big Star-esque power pop anthem that stays true to the original but with a bigger sound. The original on the B-side, called What I Got When I Get Away, is a bit spicier and just as appealing. This release is a good reason to dive into the work of The Action again, but also to revisit last year’s V For Veras LP.
Something To Say, recorded by Morgan Nicholls, is out now digitally and on vinyl 7″ through Spinout Nuggets.
