Based on the album cover and the font used, I expected the debut record of Cleveland four piece The Style Section to contain polished power pop songs. I was wrong. The eleven songs are best described as fuzzy indie rock, with a touch of slacker pop here and a dash of psychedelic influences there. The Style Section are not afraid to mix it up between and within songs, going from strummy guitar playing to solo’s to a good piece of jangle. Meanwhile, the songs are quite poppy. The record reminds me of a mashup of GBV with Knapsack and Connections which may explain why I am enjoying this record quite a bit. Give The Style Section a chance, you might like them as well. Their self-titled debut is out now on CD and Tape.
