As an award-winning songwriter from Nashville, Tim O’Connell has long earned his laurels, but he just keeps going. A year ago he released his Christmas album Silent Nights, and recently he’s been working on a trilogy that tells the story – in music – of a country boy from West Texas called Terry, who moved to Nashville in the early 1970s to become a star. When asked, Tim explains: “It’s not autobiographical, but I’ve lived some of it.” Not only the idea is good, it’s also well executed in all respects, and it gives a nice insight into the music business (and the dreams of getting there).
The series is called Terry and Jasmine – A Country Music Love Story. The first CD, On Broadway, is out now, named after Lower Broadway, where all the country music honky-tonks are in Nashville. You’ll hear 14 varied alt-country songs with beautiful melodies and strong instrumentation, lyrically very interesting with memorable phrases: “From the bottom of my heart to the top of the charts.” You’ll have to play the album a few times to really bring it to life. I could have picked a lot more tracks to share here, but the ones below give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. This kind of old-fashioned quality is timeless.
On Broadway, produced, mixed and mastered by Buck Brown, is out now digitally and on CD (self-released). Part 2 should be out about a year from now.
