“Laugh freely, laugh often,” that sounds like good advice, right? Then you don’t know Canadian garage rock/art-punk outfit Crones yet, because in their track Red Light they casually follow that phrase with “Laugh yourself into a coffin.” Nathan Kelly (guitars, vocals), Britt Meierhofer (vocals), Chris Dibbens (bass, vocals), Cal Hilde (keys, guitars) and Landon Hilde (drums) always put your expectations to the test on their new EP – really a nice one. Opening song Big Head Baby is the obvious hit here, thanks to the catchy organ melody and the “Woo-Hoo” harmonies that rival Blur’s Song 2 (the accompanying video showcases both the band’s behind the scenes mischief and samples of their fiery live performances). Anyway, these four tunes – raucous and infectious – will at least put a smile on your face – there’s no harm in laughing freely.
Laugh Freely, Laugh Often, produced and mixed by Connor Pritchard with Nathan Kelly, is out now digitally, on CD and vinyl 7″ trough Mystic Turnip Records.
