That upcoming Speedways LP really is going to be something, huh? The band already revealed that Visiting Hours, that killer Costello-esque single, is going to open the record. Now here comes Luna, another preview that quietly sneaks up on you. The riff is understated rather than blasted through your speakers, giving the bittersweet love song room to unfold naturally. It’s subtle in a way that makes the payoff hit even harder.
But the real giveaway that this next album may be special is the B-side. I Shouldn’t Have Tried To Leave Without You is pure romantic power pop gold. Classic Speedways at their jangliest, with guest vocals from Mary Blount lifting the chorus into the clouds. That “I was the one who lost I loved you” line had me hooked on the first spin and refuses to leave my brain. Honestly, this feels like the kind of song most bands would build an entire album around, and if Matt, Adrian, Kris and Dan are confident in excluding this one from the tracklist, it raises dangerous questions about just how strong the rest of the LP might be.
Fortunately, this one is getting the proper 7″ treatment. We all win. Pre-order through Stardumb, Folc, or Beluga.
