Musicians with past or present ties to bands like J Church, Party Garbage, Caves, Flamingo 50, Drunken Boat, and An Uneasy Peace discovered they were living in the same area, started a J Church cover band, named themselves after a J Church song, began writing their own material—and a year later, here we are with their self-titled debut. That’s about the gist of the origin story for Carnivorous Flower.
The ten-song album races by in just 17 minutes. It’s uncomplicated punk rock without bells or whistles: scrappy, immediate, and effective. Nothing more, nothing less. There’s even a track titled Ramonesing It, which pretty much says it all about this band’s ethics. Throughout it all, the songs on this self-titled LP keep the spontaneity and spark of first takes intact—don’t overthink, don’t polish, just play.
12″ out now on Dead Broke Rekerds.
