For an album with such a heavy title, You Wouldn’t Like It Inside My Head turns out to be an easy listen—uplifting even—despite the autobiographical struggles it lays bare. These are confessionary folk anthems disguised as indie punk tunes: unpolished yet accessible, with direct, unflinching lyrics about heavy themes delivered over melodies that stick.

At the heart of it all is Beth Seymour, a proud trans woman from Melbourne, who handles most of the heavy lifting here (vocals, guitar, bass, recording, mixing), supported by Martyn Richmond (aka “The Lizzies”) on drums and percussion.

This LP is said to be the first in a series chronicling Seymour’s life story, with this installment zooming in on her struggles with identity. In a way, it feels like getting a book in the form of a record: a two-for-one deal that’s hard to resist. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll already be waiting in line for the sequel.*
