New EP: Alley Girl || Paradigm Scrambler

Lo-fi dreams and outsider pop from a romantic soul

Alley Girl is the garage-pop project of Dutch-born/Bosnian-rooted/US-based singer-songwriter Doris Stanić (previously in Dream Machine), who debuted two months ago with the successful Peregrine Rambler LP. Now we get six new songs on the Paradigm Scrambler EP, built on the same ingredients in both sound and title. It’s quite lo-fi, somewhat hazy, perhaps even primitive, but it’s so pure and lush with good ideas that it’s all as charming as can be.

The way the guitars, piano, and drum machine work together, yet often go their own way, is inimitable, held together by the irresistible girl-group-esque vocals—harmonies and handclaps complete the picture. Opening track Right Place is the biggest hit here—what an amazing journey—but the intense and delightfully derailing Fire In Your Eyes is also impossible to ignore, and we definitely have to mention the raw cover of The Box Tops’ 1967 hit The Letter.

Paradigm Scrambler is out digitally (self-released).
