On Music for Writers, Steve Gunn steps away from song structure to focus on mood and texture. It’s his first solo instrumental album—a subtle, ambient collection meant to accompany thought and offer room to breathe.
Recorded in Brooklyn, Berlin, and Latvia using just guitar, synths, field recordings, and the space of each room, these tracks are quiet and slow-moving, but never dull. Some are brief, others stretch out, but all feel intentional and open-ended—more like settings than statements.
There’s no big concept here, just a strong sense of presence. Gunn creates soundscapes that don’t demand attention but reward it. It’s music you can work to, rest with, or get lost in.
Music for Writers is out now on Three Lobed Recordings and quietly makes a case for stillness in a loud world.
