Visual Learner is an unusual name for a band, isn’t it? It sparks the old hypothetical: would you rather be blind or deaf? Clearly, the Minneapolis quartet (ft. members of Notches, Scrounger, Kira Jari, Billy Raygun, Rag Rage and Coordinated Suicides) are neither. Their debut LP Greg (out now on Salinas Records and Bloated Kat Records) looks and sounds like something Lookout! Records could’ve released three decades ago—though not from the bubblegum pop-punk side, but the scrappier punk rock corner of the label.
That said, Visual Learner pull from a broader map, taking cues from Hüsker Dü, Avail, Leatherface, and Jawbreaker. There’s melody threaded through all 10 songs, but it’s rough-edged and frayed rather than sugar-coated. Give Greg a couple of spins, and you realize it is a sleeper hit: your appreciation starts climbing gradually, then rockets up exponentially, and before you know it, you’re hooked.
