Tim Boykin started Lolas in Birmingham, Alabama back in the late ’90s. With that kind of longevity, their new album Big Hits and Freak Disasters (out now on Kool Kat) is easily assumed to be a best-of collection padded with demos and covers. It’s not—but it sure sounds like a greatest hits in spirit.
Writing power pop gems is Lolas’ M.O., and this record is overflowing with ’60s-inspired, hook-heavy guitar pop. Tracks like Shut Me Down and Trick Myself come impressively close to power pop perfection.
Technically, this is a compilation of sorts: the album collects the digital-only singles Boykin released since 2021. That explains the slightly mixed sonic palette—from punky cuts like All Sewn Up to more polished ’80s-leaning power pop like I Couldn’t Stop It and Jacqui. And then there’s From the Start, which could pass as a Nada Surf demo.
The result? A dynamic and satisfying listen that any power pop fan should check out immediately.
