New album: Jimmy Vapid || The Donnas

Fourteen songs of pure nostalgic fun

Let’s face it, we live in times where being original is a gamble and producing something people are familiar with is a guaranteed profit or return on investment. Just look at your local cinema with even the Naked Gun series getting a reboot now. Or what about tribute bands that attract an audience of a thousand while the majority of bands we cover that create exciting original music would be through the moon to get a tenth of that. But as much as all of that sucks, here’s a counterargument: Jimmy Vapid doing the Donnas’ self-titled debut album front-to-back? Damn, it’s exactly what I need right now!

Joined by Judy Dagmar and Al McCartney, Vapid fires away on these 14 Donnas classics, keeping the arrangements mostly intact, changing a couple of “boys” to “girls,” adding a guitar lick here and there, and upping the production value*. The result is a bubblegum pop punk record that may not be essential or original, but is a whole lot of fun and a fine tribute to the comet-like emergence of the Donnas in ’97.

“Let’s go mano! Here we go! M – A – N – O, Let’s go mano.”

The LP will be sold through Jimmy Vapid in Canada, Frankenvinylstein in the US, and in Europe through Stardumb, Radiation, and Surfin’Ki!

*This isn’t the first time Vapid has done the Donnas by the way. There was that unreleased 4-song Donnas cover EP that eventually made its way onto their New Wave Humour compilation LP. The Donnas LP features newly recorded versions though!
