It’s hard to keep up with the output of My Favorite Boxer, but the alter ego of Johnny Rootbeer aka Sam R. Smith—check out the Only Hits compilation if you’re not familiar with his work—has recorded a few new lo-fi gems worth sharing, collected on the three-track Five Pigs EP. Opener Yeah That’s Right is an anti-folk song that plants its title like an addictive mantra in the back of your mind, rhythmic and radical. It is followed by a sincere acoustic cover of Liz Phair Polyester Bride, and the beautiful love song Diamonds In Your Eyes, over eight minutes long. The phrase “stepping up your game” was probably coined for releases like this.
