Since 2018, Montreal’s Béton Armé have been quietly cementing a reputation, and Renaissance might be the release that pushes them into a broader spotlight. Their latest LP will absolutely satisfy longtime fans, but also attract a fresh wave of converts—and not just because it drops via La Vida Es Un Mus, one of the most exciting punk labels around.
What sets Renaissance apart is how Béton Armé balance toughness with tunefulness. The band hits hard, sure, but there’s a surprising amount of melody woven into the aggression. Dare I say it’s even fun—yes, fun—even if you don’t speak French (the sing-along “woohohoho” moments help). Drawing from ‘80s French and Italian punk and Oi, but with the snap and snarl of early American hardcore, Béton Armé craft something that feels classic yet energized.
It’s a record that works in nearly any context: skating, commuting, doing chores, hitting the gym, renovating your house. And yeah, it’s easy to imagine how wild these songs would go off in a live setting. Punks, skins, and hardcore kids will find common ground here—and anyone else who still believes in volume, heart, and unity.
