We first encountered Idle Ray four years ago as yet another intriguing chapter in the career of Michigan’s prolific and influential songwriter/musician Fred Thomas (Chore, His Name Is Alive, Saturday Looks Good To Me, etc.), but their sophomore full-length, Even in the Spring—also featuring Devon Clausen and Frances Ma—is a true band effort. Shared vocal duties add depth and texture, while the trio’s collective musical chemistry shines throughout.
In just 25 brisk minutes, the album delivers ten tightly wound, guitar-driven tracks that twist and shimmer through jangle pop, new wave, and indie rock. “It felt good to not be going backwards,” you’ll hear on the standout opening song—a fitting sentiment for a record that feels fresh, forward-moving, and full of promise.
Even in the Spring is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Life Like. Featuring Fred Thomas (guitar, vocals), Devon Clausen (bass, vocals), and Frances Ma (guitar, vocals), with help on drums from Nick German, Jayson Gerycz, and Emily Roll.
