For a musical project named Kid Chameleon, it is surprisingly consistent. There is zero adaptation to trends or current sounds in Liam James Marsh’s songwriting. If you’ve heard his previous Kid Chameleon records (I’ve lost count, even though I’ve covered a handful of them), you won’t be surprised by the latest addition to Marsh’s discography: An Away to Reason: Parkwood Springs. It’s exactly what you expected it to be, and that’s entirely fine—because you know it’s going to be good.
The album contains nine songs written and recorded in the past trimester, fresh-as-daisies guitar pop with a touch of melancholia and lines that sneak up on you. Take this one from Even the Wild: “You think your sadness is a suit that fits. I’m sick to death of hearing about it.” I have trouble wrapping my head around Kid Chameleon having only 61 monthly Spotify listeners, but those 61 human beings are not wrong. In fact, I am kinda curious to find out what else they are listening to.
