New single: The Sleeveens || UFOs/Bernadette

Installment 13 of I-94 Recordings' cover series is a must-have

Are we the last blog to acknowledge the new Sleeveens single? The band’s been getting rave reviews, and some trusted tastemakers have already crowned The Sleeveens debut LP (released earlier this year) their Album of the Year. But the single’s been elusive – absent from Bandcamp, Soundcloud, and other streaming services. We don’t share what we haven’t heard, but thankfully, these tracks finally surfaced on YouTube last week.

And boy, are they worth the wait. UFOs, a mid-paced garage rock ‘n’ roll original, cleverly mocks racists and xenophobes. Stefan Murphy’s inspired vocals and the song’s repetitive nature have a hypnotic effect. The B-side is a Four Tops cover – the single is part I-94 Detroit covers series after all. The Sleeveens’ take on Bernadette is an absolute smash, leaving us yearning for a Sleeveens version of the complete Four Tops’ Reach Out album.
