Five years after his must-have debut album Broke, Scott Lavene releases LP No. 3: Disneyland In Dagenham, named after a theme park that would never be, in practice a pickup spot for drugs. We get ten fascinating crank wave tunes in which the British songsmith switches between singing and talking, although compelling storytelling is the better description. His style is at times slightly reminiscent of Craig Finn, so it feels appropriate that The Hold Steady’s frontman contributes to opening track Paper Roses, but musically there is more of an experiment here. This happens most atypical in Sadly I’m Not Steve McQueen, a banger for big sound systems in the clubs, one that begs to be transformed into remixes even more danceable. This record remains more than interesting for the entire 43 minutes, thanks to the clever and chucklesome lyrics that claim the spotlight. Like for example in standout love song Debbie, about an inventor trying to build a rocket: “Take the bread out of that, it’s not a toaster.”
