What it Takes is the fifth studio album from Toronto’s garage rock / new wave / trash pop outfit Mad Ones, and it’s a release not to be missed. Andrew DeVillers (lead vocals, guitar), Russ Fernandes (bass, vocals) and Jesse L. Bellon (drums, vocals) recorded the ten new songs performing live in the studio, maximizing the in-without-knocking energy of their music. It’s heartfelt and raw and dirty and straightforward, with electrifying guitars and gritty vocals (and infectious harmonies), but not wild and uncontrolled. Mad Ones breathe rock ‘n’ roll, but have by now become wise enough to know how to dose their exhalation for optimal effect.
