The new single by Melbourne power pop sensation The Prize came out mid-August on Anti Fade and Drunken Sailor Records, but for some reason the B-side has yet to surface on the streaming services. I was eagerly waiting for that to happen so I could share it here. The bad news is that the B-side still hasn’t popped up. The good news is that I managed to snatch up the 7″ vinyl last Friday at their show in The Hague and I was finally able to check out the second track on the single.
The Prize playing a free show not that far from where I Iive is one of those random surprises that I just love. Why a surprise? The band only has two releases so far: an amazing EP and the recent First Sight 7″, combining for a total of 6 released tracks. That seems a bit premature for an European tour right? Then again, the hit rate of both the EP and the new single is 100%. First Sight is a classic power pop song with an incredibly catchy Tonight! Tonight! Tonight! group vocal. Flipside Say You’re Mine has a higher pace and more dual (triple? quadruple?) vocal goodness. This is a must own single for fans of the genre.
By the way, I truly enjoyed the show The Prize put up. The triple guitar threat of the band is a treat (rock-n- roll!), they have a rockstar singer/drummer that plays loud and energetic, and all members pitching in on the vocals makes their songs even more infectious. Starting off with a small audience, the band quickly drew in more people and by the end left the audience screaming for more. The band had ran out of songs, and decided to play an impromptu and raucous Ramones style Do You Wanna Dance?
Afterward, The Prize drummer and vocalist Nadine told me that The Prize has recently started recording for their debut LP. I Can’t Hardly Wait!
