American psychobilly outfit The Cramps probably needs no introduction, and the continuing influence of other artists’ songs Lux Interior and Poison Ivy have taught us throughout their existence (1976-2009) shouldn’t be underestimated. It therefore seems obvious that their own work has also been covered frequently, and more was to be expected now that they are once again in the spotlight thanks to the iconic dance scene in Netflix’s hit series Wednesday. Leave that to Los Angeles-based independent record label Cleopatra Records. On their new compilation Goo Goo Muck – A Tribute To The Cramps they bring together “an all-star line-up of ghouls and goblins from across the musical spectrum unite to pay tribute to the legendary horror-themed garage rock giants.” The Cramps’ most popular songs have been chosen here, a mix of originals and tracks that were already covers, including Ronnie Cook’s Goo Goo Muck, Charlie Feathers’ I Can’t Hardly Stand It and Little Willie John’s Fever. You’ll successively hear Shooter Jennings, The Courettes, The 69 Eyes, Night Beats, Bat!, The Hillbilly Moon Explosion, The Flamin’ Groovies, Blitzkid, The Brains, Linda Gail Lewis (Jerry Lee’s sister) with Danny B. Harvey & Clem Burke, The Fuzztones and Stellar Corpses, who forge a coherent entirety despite their different backgrounds. Fans of The Cramps or of the featured artists don’t want to miss this one.
Goo Goo Muck – A Tribute To The Cramps is out now digitally and on purple/black splatter vinyl LP through Cleopatra Records.
