Where Wet Leg was the justified sensation of 2022, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lavalove takes that honor in 2023. We’re talking about a Los Angeles, California-based indie pop band featuring Tealarose Coy, Stephanie De Santos, Jennifer Quay and Dylan Goldstein. They debuted in 2020 with the Beluga Moon EP, but now they have released their first full-length album, and Love Sick has what it takes to win many hearts. Like pink clouds reflected in a full cocktail glass, with giggling in the background. Although the ingredients are not new – dreamy bedroom pop with summery influences from indie rock, psych, twee pop and surf (like a mash-up of Beach Bunny, Alvvays, High Sunn and Mazzy Star) – this record sounds as fresh as it is steamy, with jangly guitars and catchy melodies over which distinctive vocals always manage to intrigue. Hits follow each other quickly here, with Sweethearts FM as one of the standout tracks, if only because of the great title that perfectly describes what to expect.
Love Sick is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Pure Noise Records.
