New EP: Big Life || Big Life

Ryan Allen is best known for his powerpop and pop punk tendencies, for example with The Extra Arms. His musical taste is not limited to that kind of stuff though, as you will find out by pressing play on his new musical project Big Life. Allen started Big Life with Sean Gauvreau (bass & vocals), Dan Nixon (vocals) and Jordan Vonzynda (drums) after falling in a ’80s Dischord records rabbit hole. “I’d been listening to a lot of 80’s Dischord stuff, started writing a few tunes in that vein just for fun, and, then, realized that it could be a band,” Allen explains at Idioteq.

The outfit’s debut is an eight-song EP full of melodic hardcorepunk. The music is clearly inspired by Revolution Summer bands. I particularly love the Dag Nasty vibes in songs like Your Truth and Learn Everything. But Big Life does not limit themselves to one specific style, citing their love for ’80s Minneapolis bands as well as exciting modern hardcore bands like Truth Cult and Praise. In theory, Big Life’s great taste in music and their passion for underground music should provide excellent fuel for creating great art. In practice, their debut delivers on all accounts.

Big Life is out now on Tape through Setterwind Records.
