Since the last time we wrote about Brett Newski, the Wisconsin-based geek rocker hasn’t been idle (he keeps me and other fans up to date through a weekly newsletter, but he’s also busy with his engaging Dirt From The Road podcast). His acclaimed album (also a book) It’s Hard to be a Person is now getting a successor. As NEWSKI – a band’s effort – he releases new full-length Friend Rock. To reinforce the motto that “we are nothing without our friends” (the LP is an ode to the power of community), Brett Newski (vocals, guitars), Sean “Tubs” Anderson (4-string) and Steve “Mr Bicep” Vorass (drums) are joined on each song by one or more of their soul mates*, like Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws in standout track Chemicals. It has led to an attractive 28 minutes of power pop with a 90s feel, music and lyrics that are easy to love.
Friend Rock is out now digitally, on CD and vinyl LP via Nomad Union. *Featuring Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Brian Vander Ark (the Verve Pipe), Ryan Miller (Guster), Miles Nielsen, Scott Terry (Red Wanting Blue), H Burns, The Secret Beach, and The Shabs.
