Maura Weaver is on a mission. Exactly two years year after her excellent solo debut I Was Due For A Heartbreak, she’s back with Strange Devotion—and it’s another leap forward for the artist who previously played with Mixtapes, Boys and Ogikubo Station. What’s surprising is the label: Feel It Records, usually home to the louder and weirder side of punk and garage, is not where you’d expect a sparkling alt indie pop record to land. Then again, Feel It knows quality when they see it, and this one’s undeniable.
Strange Devotion finds Weaver stretching her sound and sliding deeper in pop territory—jangly alt pop here, fuzzed-out riffs there, always anchored by her voice that can sound both tough and tender in the same line. Songs like The Face and Do Nothing hit instantly, but it’s the depth of the record that sticks. Weaver sounds fully in control, turning personal reflections into tunes you’ll want to keep spinning.
