New EP: Audio Visual Drop Kicks || Greenhouse

Please meet Audio Visual Drop Kicks (AVDK), a new alternative rock band from Dunedin, New Zealand. Kaia (vocals, rhythm guitar), Jeremy (vocals, bass), George (lead guitar) and Shaarav (drums) have just released their debut EP Greenhouse, featuring five surfy indie rock tracks with a big sound and relatable lyrics (it somewhat reminds me of Pulp sentimentally, although it sounds quite different). A promising start that leaves you wanting more. The video below gives a glimpse into their lives, and thanks to this compelling music you get the feeling that you are part of it for a while.

Greenhouse, produced by Sam Charlesworth (except Meursault – by Josh Jolly), is out now digitally (self-released).

New album: The Symptones || The Symptones

The sophomore LP from Minneapolis-based indie rock band The Symptones is like a fresh pair of shoes that immediately fit well. Taylor Tuomie (lead vocals, guitar, keys), Andrew Polski (guitar), Jeremy Gullikson (bass, backup vocals), Jake Nemec (trumpet, keys, percussion) and Steven George (drums, percussion, backup vocals) know how to hit the right note with their guitar rock in which influences from jangle pop, soul and folk can be discerned. The twelve diverse tracks are summery and infectious, with irresistible melodies and powerful vocals. Familiar, yet surprising, original and brand new.

The Symptones, mixed & mastered by Ali Jaafar, is out now digitally (self-released).

New EP: The Vapour Trails || On A Beautiful Day

Scottish indie pop band The Vapor Trails are back with the On A Beautiful Day EP, released a year and a half after their mini-album Underneath Tomorrow. That doesn’t mean that the band members have put their instruments to rest in between, because we regularly encounter their names – Kevin Robertson (vocals , rhythm guitar), Scott Robertson (vocals , lead guitar, bass), Nicholas Mackie (vocals, rhythm guitar), Andy Crossan (bass) and Kenny Munro (drums) – in other projects in the scene. They reinforce each other and and make for an organic entity. The 60s inspired craftsmanship is dripping from the four new original tracks, music in which jangly power pop and neo-psychedelic folk rock merge with addictive melodies and sunny wordplay by charming vocals.

On A Beautiful Day, mixed & mastered by Nick Bertling, is out digitally and on CD through Futureman Records.

New EP: The Lost Noise Figure || Get It On

Remember Greek psychedelic garage rock band The Lost Noise Figure? Eighteen months after their debut album Alive, George Kiriakidis (bass, vocals) and Tolis Michalopoulos (guitars, drums, backing vocals) are back with six new songs. The sound on the Get It On EP is less hallucinatory and somewhat more mature and unambiguous, leaning towards sunny surf rock with reverb-soaked guitar melodies. Hook-filled, laid-back and magnetic.

Get It On is out digitally (self-released). Add to wantlist: Bandcamp

New album: The Speeding Bullets || Space Rumble

It was in the summer of 2000 in Coimbra (Portugal), that some friends started playing together for the love of fun and rock ‘n’ roll. As psychobilly/surf band The Speeding Bullets they successfully toured all over the country, but it wasn’t until they celebrated their 20th anniversary that they agreed to take the step to go to a studio with their most popular songs. And lo, finally here’s their debut album Space Rumble, a collection of 12 hits that have stood the test of time, matured and perfected along the way. It’s an exciting mixture of rockabilly, surf rock and garage punk, inspired by sci-fi and b-line movies, part instrumentals and part vocals, which perfectly reflects the live energy and excitement of the dexterous four-piece. It’s never too late for good music.

Space Rumble, recorded by João “Jorri” Silva & Henrique Toscano and mixed by João Santiago, is out now digitally and on vinyl LP through Chaputa! Records. Featuring Bruno Malo (double bass, vocals), José Rebola (guitars, darbuka, vocals, sonoplasty), Tiago “Nakata” Coelho (guitars, vocals) and Luís Duarte (drums, percussion, keys, vocals).

New album: M.O.T.O. || M.O.T.O.’s The Wall of Phlegm

M.O.T.O.’s The Wall of Phlegm? That sounds pretty disgusting. It’s the title of a new M.O.T.O. odds and ends LP that will water the mouth of fans of uncomplicated lo-fi garagepoppunk. The record is a 22 songs-in-38-minutes clash of buzzsaw guitars and simple pop melodies. The songs are all 4-track home recordings by Paul Caporino and have their origin somewhere in the past 7-25 years. The record starts with a cover of Motörhead’s Killed By Death and from there on out it’s an all CAPS hit fest. Mixed by Caporino himself together with Drew Owen, this one is filthy in a good way. Pre-order the vinyl now, expected ship date is around October 10.

New compilation: Invading The Border (Faster And Louder Records/This Is Just A Record Label)

Punkrock is in a pretty good place in 2023. Both in quantity and quality, there are loads of acts worth discovering. If you are looking for a quick way to check out 30 bands, Invading The Border is here for you. The compilation features 15 US bands and 15 Canadian bands, with Team USA taking the even numbers and Team Canada the odd ones. It’s a co-release by two labels with names that are selfexplanatory: Faster and Louder and This Is Just A Record Label. Zero fuss, zero pretension, max fun!

The thirty bands on Invading The Border operate in the same sonic multiverse, but plenty of punk subgenres are touched upon. Only a small portion have been featured on this site before, like Vista Blue, Ann Beretta, and Dave Strong. That leaves plenty of room to scratch that itch for new punkrock.

Streaming now on Bandcamp, CD expected September 1st.

New album: The Cigarette Bums || Trashtown

Californian garage punk outfit The Cigarette Bums are heading towards their fifteenth anniversary, but show no signs of slowing down. On their new full-length Trash Town you’ll hear eighteen tracks (including some skits) that live up to the album title in terms of sound, contents en cover art. The current lineup – Ciggy Bop aka Steven Carrera (guitar, vocals), Massimo (guitar, vocals), Rudy Melgar (bass), Chandler Sterling (keys, synths) and L’Austin Ash (drums, percussion, vocals) – play dirty and loud ramshackle rock ‘n’ roll, which should appeal to fans of bands like FIDLAR, Together Pangea and Jacuzzi Boys. This record is energetic, fast and surprisingly catchy – jumping along is allowed.

Trash Town, produced by Ciggy Bop and Lionel WillIams, is out now digitally and on vinyl LP (self-released).

New EP: Half Deaf Clatch || Back To Basics

Earlier this year we raved about the Feels Like Home LP by British blues singer/songwriter/guitarist Andrew McLatchie who makes music under the moniker of Half Deaf Clatch, and he’s already back with this Back To Basics EP. We get four original acoustic songs that are carried by compelling guitar playing and personal lyrics by heartfelt gritty vocals, but the instruments* used – “recorded through vacuum tube mic pre-amps for added warmth, saturation and dirt” – show how much love and care is put into it. Authentic craftsmanship, how beautiful.

Back To Basics, written, performed, recorded, mixed & mastered by A D McLatchie, is out now digitally and on homemade CD through Speak Up Recordings. *Featuring a vintage ‘Raven’ acoustic guitar, a battered ‘Rust Bucket’ resonator guitar, acoustic bass, nylon Strung open back banjo, 22 inch frame drum, small African hand drums, assorted shakers, tambourines, forest sticks, a Kalimba played with a stick, a wok being hit with a hammer, and the organ is from a Roland JV 10-10 outboard module with a controller keyboard, routed through an Orange ‘Crush’ acoustic amp, then mic’d up and recorded live.

New single: Big Boss Man || Do The Backstroke / Mother’s Earth

British live sensation Big Boss Man has been in business for twenty-five years now, with four studio albums, six 7” singles and spots on countless compilations to their name. Even if the name doesn’t mean anything to you, you’ve probably heard their instrumentals in a movie, television/radio show or commercial before. Nasser Bouzida (Hammond organ), Trevor Harding (guitar), Badger Burgess (bass) and Desmond Rogers (drums) play a hybrid of 60s rhythm & blues, Latin, soul, bongo-fuzz, funk, mod-jazz and garage rock. Their new single Do The Backstroke swings and rocks at the same time, a battle between Hammond and bongo for the dance floor, with heavy groove action and hooks waiting to be sampled by hip-hop artists. B-side Mother’s Earth has a different tension and is more suitable for a chase movie, but is just as powerful proof of what these guys have to offer.

Do The Backstroke b/w Mother’s Earth is out digitally and on 7″ vinyl through Spinout Nuggets.
