I fondly remember Flower Girl’s Tuck in Your Tie-Dye LP for its playful, twangy, and communal take on garage pop. Play it today (“Hi5’s, Hi5’s, Hi5’s, yeah!”) and it’s still seriously fun. Tuck in Your Tie-Dye came out back in 2017, but I had no idea the Brooklyn band recorded another record around that time. Said record (Ballerina) has surfaced recently, the band putting it on Bandcamp for some much-needed good vibes.
I’m looking for clues why this wasn’t released before. It may be a little more lo-fi than Tuck in Your Tie-Dye, slightly less outgoing, with more weariness creeping in. But the music is still appealing. The band’s minimalistic approach is still a strength, their talent for hook writing still evident. This belated release won’t shatter the ground beneath your feet, but these laid-back twang pop songs are easy company. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Maybe Ballerina didn’t fit the moment back then, or maybe it just got lost in the shuffle. Either way, it’s here now, and it holds up.
