Japanese quartet bedgravity make their full-length debut with Unmet Needs, a perfectly chosen title for a record steeped in angst and longing. Out now via Brassneck (UK), Bloated Kat (US), and Waterslide Records (Japan), the album arrives on labels best known for throwback punk and old-school pop punk.

Fittingly, bedgravity sound nothing like a nostalgia act. Instead, they play a thoroughly contemporary brand of indie punk, unbothered by genre borders. Shoegaze haze, emo vulnerability, and classic indie-pop and indie-rock instincts all weave naturally into the mix.

It’s easy to understand why the band are generating serious buzz in Japan, and there’s no reason that hype shouldn’t travel. Unmet Needs is a strong, confident debut that points well beyond the local scene.
