Single review: Kurt Baker || Undertow Afterglow

There is zero rust on the power pop of sir Kurt Baker

After a period of personal upheaval, Kurt Baker returns with a new two-song single on Wicked Cool Records. The A-side is a brand-new original titled Undertow Afterglow, written in a short burst session with Dan Miraldi, and it’s an instantly uplifting power pop hit. The chorus is so memorable you might briefly wonder if it’s a cover — but no, that honor goes to the B-side.

Flip it over and you’ll find My Brave Face, a song co-penned by two distinguished gentlemen, Sirs Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello which is covered here with true affection, making it sound much more like a Costello song than the McCartney version.

After a relatively quiet stretch, it’s genuinely great to hear Kurt Baker doing the thing again.
