Okay, some of you may feel we don’t need more cover records, and honestly, I get it. Others shrug. Some even prefer covers to new songs. Personally, I love a good reinterpretation now and then — especially when pop-punk bands tear into rock’n’roll and pop tunes written decades before they were born.

And if those bands happen to be legends like Beatnik Termites and The Putz, I’m all ears. Their split 12”, courtesy of Milan-based label I Buy Records and pressed in several color variants, gives each band three tracks to mess with. Beatnik Termites breeze through Next Door To An Angel (Neil Sedaka) and deliver faithful takes on I Can’t Explain and Surfer Girl.

The Putz go for even more well-worn staples — Do You Love Me?, Do Wah Diddy, and Rave On — blasting them out in full Putz mode: hopped-up, bubblegum-sticky, and charmingly snotty.

None of this is original or surprising. It’s just a blast — and sometimes that’s exactly the point.
